Truck Accidents

James O. Elliott specializes in representing plaintiffs in many types of serious personal injury cases, including truck accidents.  In excess of 100,000 individuals are injured in trucking accidents each year, and a large number of those accidents are fatal.  Trucks, including semi-trucks, tractor-trailer trucks, buses, vans, dump-trucks, garbage trucks, fire trucks, and other types of trucks are prevalent in Michigan.  Because of our industrial background, there are many types of large trucks maneuvering on the streets of our cities twenty-four hours a day.

Truck accidents (because of the size and weight of the vehicles, and their increased stopping time) often result in very serious injury or even death, ruining the lives of both the victims and their families.

Truck accident cases can be somewhat complicated because the details relating to truck accidents versus car accidents can be significantly diverse.  Further, the State of Michigan and the trucking industry have rules and regulations that truck drivers must follow.  One reason is because of the large difference in size and weight between tractor-trailers and standard passenger vehicles.  As an example, a semi-truck can weigh in excess of 80,000 pounds and can easily be in excess of fifty feet long.  Because of the large difference in weight and size, the trucks, when involved in accidents, can produce substantial damage and injuries.  It takes much longer for a large, heavy vehicle to stop once the break is applied, as compared to a passenger vehicle.  This is why there are many rear-end collisions that involve trucks.  Another common occurrence is when trucks turn at an incorrect angle, often striking other vehicles that are either at a stand-still or coming from the opposite direction.

I think everyone has experienced trucks that have “squeezed” automobiles, pedestrians, and bicyclists by way of their wide breadth and/or wide swings.  Although most truck drivers are considerate, there are some who abuse a driving situation simply because of the size of their vehicle.  James O. Elliott is capable and experienced in the pursuit of truck accident cases within the State of Michigan.
